A private company is being employed to provide mobile speed cameras at 600 locations all over Ireland. We are told these locations are accident blackspots and that the cameras will operate at night and day .
The cameras will be operated by a consortium called GoSafe. There will be just 45 camera vans with cameras that will move between the 600 locations.
They are contracted to monitor speeds for 6000 hours a month .That works out at just under 4.5 hours per van per day.
With the 65 million contract lasting 5 years – that equates to a cost of €180 per hour of monitoring.
The speed cameras will be rolled out gradually and are not expected to be fully operational until February 2011
